FREE: BATTLE FX Review
Unfiltered Audio have released the effects section of Battalion as its own plugin for free. This includes the delay, now dubbed “shatter delay”, reverb, and mastering section. They’ve also added the euclidean choke sequencer from Silo to the reverb and delay. This is a fairly simple effect, basically if you’ve ever wanted to apply the processing from Battalion to other signals, this is the perfect tool to do so.
I’ll start off with the reverb, this is basically the same reverb from Silo, which I believe is also the “lo-fi” reverb from Byome. Being able to control the reverb sample rate gives it some unique gritty characteristics. The master output section has a simple EQ, a one knob “OTT” style maximizer, and a simple distortion selection with soft clip, hard clip, and wave fold modes.
The shatter delay is where this thing really stands out, the “glitch” control was one of my favorites from Battalion, so being able to apply that to any signal will be fun. Applying a little bit of glitch to really short delays with a lot of feedback makes for some gnarly tones, especially when you adjust the sample rate control. I do wish I could tempo sync the choke while using short delays.
Over all, this is a pretty simple and straight forward plugin. The UI is lovely with the new battlefx theme, also they’ve added the ability to rotate the hue, so any theme can be transformed into a myriad of color schemes. I do wish that the delay and reverb display windows acted as XY controls for the delay and reverb controls. I think this would add a modern touch to the UI. Speaking of modern UI, you’ll notice a new little box next to the preset title, this appears to be a new preset browser, I’m hoping this comes in a future Battalion update as the old school drop down browser can be a bit finicky.
