Native Instruments has hooked me up with an early version of their Massive X update, dubbed “Massive XL”. This update brings a few major requests to the table, animated modulation and wavetable import. Wavetable import is huge, I know for many people this was a deal breaker with Massive X, so it’s great to see it finally added. They’ve also added a preset randomizer and mutator, I’m usually not a fan of these features, but I know many people will enjoy it.
A few new effects have been added. I’m really happy to see Raum as a new reverb, I love Raum and it’s still my go to reverb. They also added a new shimmer, always fun to added shimmer to presets. And a new tape wobble effect provides some nice vintage vibes.
The UI has a bit more polish, it just looks more slick, though I am missing the single view for both oscillators, but the new view gives you a full look at the wavetable shape. Also they have added visual feedback to the modulation. Like the Absynth 6 update, this one doesn’t bring a whole lot to the table, I’d have loved to see some new osc modes, more fx, or even some new insert effects, just a bit more to flesh things out and make things feel new as a sound designer. However, it does show continued support for their flagship synths and confirms that they aren’t just going to release only Kontakt libraries. I think we’re all wondering if this means an update to Reaktor is on the way, fingers crossed on that.
